The Open Night on 8 October gave the Music Department opportunity to present a very pleasant programme of music to our visitors. The Schola sang three pieces: Bring Him Home (not the usual fare of this performing group, but a piece that always transmits well), the recently-learnt On the Journey to Emmaus, and Come Receive Christ. Fifth Year Music students also contributed to the evening's programme: Siobhan Shalvey on traditional flute and low whistle played some O'Carolan airs; Ciara Masterson played En Promenade de Bordeaux, My Florence and the Canto from Festo Rusticana on accordion; Niamh McHugh also played the Promenade on accordion; Cara Woods sang Think of Me; and Aoife Manning played I Giorni on piano. Parents and prospective students were given a tour of the Music Wing, left with a sample CD of our work, and were extremely complimentary of the high standard of music they experienced in St Joseph's.

On Tuesday 6 October, the Schola recorded On the Journey to Emmaus by Marty Haugen. The recording was used as part of a semi-live broadcast from Emmaus Retreat Centre in Swords, launching an initiative by Catholic Schools Partnership where Catholic Schools were asked to reflect on the nature and mission of Catholic education. St Joseph's Mercy Secondary School is one of four pilot schools in this initiative, which will be extended to all 350 Catholic schools in the country over the coming years. |
